Pierz walks off with win over Caledonia, advances to DII Final

Spicer, MN - Pierz won Saturday's semi-final round game of the Minnesota American Legion Division II State Tournament in dramatic fashion, with an 8-7 walk-off victory over Caledonia. The game was tied at seven with Pierz batting in the bottom of the eighth when Matt Kummet singled off of Cole Folsom, driving in the winning run.


Pierz held a 5-0 lead after three innings yet Caledonia scored seven runs to tie the game yet came up short in the extra frame.  A double by Kyle Cavanaugh in the fourth, a groundout by Eric Augedahl in the fourth, a walk in the fourth, a single by Derek Vonderohe in the seventh, and a error in the seventh.


Pierz took an early lead in the first inning. With two outs in the first inning Alex Funk drove in two runs when he singled.


In the bottom of the seventh inning, Pierz tied things up at seven. Reese Kapsner's sac fly scored one run for Pierz.


Caledonia was not finished and proved getting to 21-outs can be a difficult task in securing a victory.  They scored four runs in the seventh inning. Caledonia's big inning was driven by a single by Vonderohe and a error.


Preston Rocheleau earned the win for Pierz. He threw two innings, allowing zero runs, zero hits, striking out one, and walking one. Cole Folsom took the loss for Caledonia. He went one inning, allowing one run, two hits, and walking one.


Casey Storlie started the game for Caledonia. He went six and a third innings, giving up seven runs, eight hits, and striking out seven. Alec Lochner started the game for Pierz. He pitched three and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs, four hits, and striking out one.


Pierz had ten hits in the game. Matt Kummet and Rocheleau each collected multiple hits for Pierz. Rocheleau and Kummet each collected three hits to lead Pierz who advanced to the championship game on Sunday against the winner of the Proctor and Springfield game in Spicer at 1:30pm.  


Caledonia collected eight hits. Payton Schott and Storlie each collected multiple hits for Caledonia who will face the loser of the Proctor and Springfield game in the third place game in Spicer tomorrow at 11:00am.
