Minneapolis, MN - Despite a 5-run deficit in the fifth inning, St. Michael almost came all the way back, eventually falling 6-5 to Excelsior on Saturday at Siebert Field in Minneapolis. St. Michael scored runs in each of the last three innings to erase a 5-0 deficit with 2 in the 7th, 1 in the 8th, and 2 in the 9th.
A key run in the 9th inning scored by Excelsior held up as the difference in the game. Jack Schechtman singled to center field scoring Gus Steiger for what would hold up as the game winning run.
Excelsior (37-5-2) scored three runs in the fifth inning. Excelsior's big inning was driven by a triple by Aaron Brush and a single by Schechtman.
St. Michael had eight hits in the game. Ethan Krehbiel-Valoga, Alex Wilde, and Nick Dinkeleach collected multiple hits for St. Michael. Travis Brown, Ethan Knutson and Wilde each drove in one run to lead St. Michael. St. Michael was sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Brown had the most chances in the field with 11. They close out their successful 2017 American Legion Campaign with an 18-12 record.
Excelsior collected 13 hits. Schechtman and Gus Steiger each collected multiple hits for Excelsior. The win advances Excelsior to another elimination game today. This time their date is with Eastview. The game will be played at 4pm at Siebert Field on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
