Ham Lake pitched and hit their way to a sound 10-2 victory of Eden Prairie in Minnesota American Legion State Tournament action from CHS Field in St. Paul Saturday evening.
Ham Lake (19-13-1) scored a single run in the bottom half of the first and second innings and continued their steady pace of offensive production throughout the game capping it off with a three-run eighth inning.
A single by McDonald and a double by Seth Miller in fueled the 8th inning for Ham Lake as Conner Melton earned the win for Ham Lake and picked up his fourth win of the season by going eight innings, giving up two runs, six hits, and striking out four.
Melton used the spacious CHS field to his advantage as he induced 14 fly ball outs and a total of 16 putouts by his outfielders to keep the run producing Eden Prairie bats at bay.
Torben Urdahl took the loss for Eden Prairie. He threw six innings, surrendering five runs, ten hits, and striking out two.
Ham Lake had 15 hits in the game with Joey Messier, McDonald, Miller, Jon Coello, Alex Winslow, and Spencer Smith each collecting multiple hits for Ham Lake. McDonald and Messier all had three hits to lead Ham Lake.Mike
Espe led Eden Prairie (20-9) with three hits in five at bats. Espe and his team will be in action against South Hennepin league rival Excelsior at 10am Sunday morning at CHS Field. The winner stays alive while the losing team will see their season end.
Ham Lake advanced to play the winner of Waconia and Tri-City Red on Sunday night at 7pm at CHS Field. The winner of the game tomorrow night will assure the winning team a spot in the Regional Tournament and place them one win away from being the 2017 State Champions.
