Minneapolis, MN - Stillwater topped Moorhead by a score of 5-2 to eliminate the Moorhead Blues in Minnesota American Legion Baseball State Tournament play Saturday evening at Siebert Field in Minneapolis.
Cody Venske was 2-4 with 3 RBI for Stillwater to help lead his team who took the early 3-0 lead after two innings with a pair of runs in the first and another in the second. Venske doubled with two outs in the first inning and knocked in Graham Laubsher and Mason Schwerzler. Austin Murr knocked an RBI single in the second inning for Stillwater.
Stillwater pitcher Matt Crowell pitched an efficient complete game gem working 9 innings while allowing 2 runs on 9 hits. He struck out 5 Blues batters while walking just two on 113 pitches.
A two run 8th inning by Stillwater (25-8) allowed them some breathing room as they pulled away from a one run game.
Moorhead's Brett Erickson was 2-4 with a double, triple, an RBI, and one run scored. Joining Erickson with multi-hit games for Moorhead were Tanner McBain and Isaac Howe.
The loss closed out a 37-13 season for Moorhead this year.
Stillwater advances to face the loser of Waconia and Tri-City Red in an elimination game on Sunday afternoon at 1pm from CHS Field. They are a part of the final six of the tournament.
