Edina Post 471 rode the arm of Ritchie Holetz to a 6-0 win to open the two team’s bid for the 2018 Minnesota American Legion State Tournament from Courtney Field in Edina, Minnesota.
Holetz worked 4 ⅔ innings and scattered five Brainerd hits while allowing zero runs with six strikeouts to lift his record to 9-0 on the season. Holetz exited the game with 99 pitches. Oscar O’Brien and Lucas Fleming combined for 2 ⅓ innings of scoreless relief out of the bullpen. O’Brien fanned three Brainerd batters.
Drew Schmidt’s sacrifice fly plated Andrew Enck in the first inning for what held up as the game winning run. Post 471 continued to apply the pressure on Brainerd with a three run second inning. Enck and Carter Theis each had RBIs in the inning.
Colin Kleffman took the loss on the mound for Brainerd Post 255. He allowed four runs on five hits over two innings with a strikeout.
Edina pounded out 11 hits in the win with Enck (4-4) and Chester Dixon (2-4) leading the way with multiple hit efforts at the top of the Edina order. Brainerd had eight hits on the game with Max Boran (2-3) and Broc Peterson (2-4) leading the way for Brainerd.
Brainerd faces Buffalo in an elimination game at 3:30pm from Courtney field while Edina will square off against Woodbury Blue.
