After scoring a combined 15 runs in their first two games of the tournament, Edina’s offense came to a sudden halt on Friday night. They were shut down by an impressive pitching performance from John Solfest, who led his Tri-City team to a 2-0 victory over Edina.
With two outs in the bottom of the 1st, Tri-City struck first. Brett Bateman notched the first run of the game after scoring on a wild pitch.
While Tri-City pitcher John Solfest continued to work the Edina lineup, his offense was busy adding another run. With the bases loaded in the 4th, Jonah Sparks delivered an RBI single to give Tri-City a 2-0 lead. The bases remained loaded with no outs, but Edina pitcher Drew Bishop worked himself out of the jam, only allowing one run.
Tri City had another chance to increase their 2-0 lead in the 5th. Carter Traczyk led off the inning with a single, and Justin Langer followed with a walk. But once again, Edina escaped with minimal damage.
Tri City held off a potential Edina rally in the 7th, walking away with a 2-0 win.
John Solfest was certainly the star of the game tonight, as he finished with a very impressive stat line for Tri City: 7.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K.
Up next: Tri-City Red faces Wayzata tomorrow at 6pm in a semifinal matchup, while Edina will face the winner of the Buffalo/Mankato National matchup tomorrow.
