St. Michael tops Woodbury 8-4

August 3, 2018

After a 7-1 loss to Eastview in their tournament opener, St Michael Post 567 responded with another solid victory to keep their state tournament hopes alive. They topped Woodbury Post 501 8-4 in Friday’s action.

St. Michael got their bats rolling early in the 1st with an RBI single from Bradley commit Paxton Thompson. Ethan Krehbiel-Valoaga scored on a wild pitch later in the 1st to bump the St Michael lead to 2.

After two scoreless innings, St Michael got back in the run column with a pair of runs in the 4th and 5th. A wild pitch scored Nick Dinkel and a Marcus Krupke single drove in another run in the 4th. In the 5th, a suicide squeeze was the difference in the 5th run for St. Michael, and Alex Wilde plated another run on a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0. It was a rough day for Woodbury starter Rodney Erickson, who allowed 9 walks in 4 and ⅓ innings.

Woodbury brought their comeback game in the bottom of the 5th. Adam Mazur had a monster double to center field, bringing home teammates Davis and Amundson. Brock Rinehart’s single the very next at bat brought 2 more home, cutting the lead to just 2 runs.

In the 6th, St. Michael plated another insurance run with a sacrifice fly from Nick Dinkel.

Tournament hits leader Boston Merila added another hit to resume in the 7th, this time driving home Jason Huser. Jordan Krupke  shut the door in the 7th for St. Michael, ensuring a 8-4 victory.

With the victory, St. Michael Post 567 will play Rosetown Post 542 at 3:30pm this afternoon. Woodbury is now eliminated from the state tournament.
