Rosetown walks it off to keep season alive

August 5, 2018

After losing their first game of the tournament to Minneapolis Gopher Post, Rosetown has rallied all the way around the loser’s bracket and is now just a win away from advancing to the state championship. Their incredible run continued with a 2-1 walkoff victory against Edina on Saturday.

It was an incredibly quiet game through 3 innings, with neither team gathering a hit. Edina had the bases loaded in their half of the 3rd thanks to 3 walks, but they left all of their runners stranded.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Rosetown recorded the first hit of the game, a double off the bat of Alec Curtis. Edina got their first hit of the night in the top of the 5th. Chester Dixon singled to right field. Neither team was able to do any damage with their first hit of the night. Chester Dixon singled again in the 5th, but his teammates left him stranded.

Liam Traynor singled for Rosetown with two outs in the 5th, but his offense went dead for the rest of the inning. In the 6th inning, Edina was finally able to push a run across. After a single from Drew Schmidt, his brother Cam Schmidt legged out a triple to drive him in. Although they only scored one run in the 6th, It was a huge relief for the Hornets to get the run that kept eluding them.

Edina starter Walter Brandt attempted to finish off a complete game in the 7th, but a leadoff double signaled the end of the night for him. Lucas Fleming was the new man in relief, and he walked his first batter, giving Rosetown runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. Fleming then hit the next batter, loading the bags up with no outs. He secured a vital 1st out of the inning by striking out his next batter. But Tri-City ended up winners on the next at bat. Alec Curtis hit a walkoff single to left field, driving in the tying run. Edina left fielder Drew Schmidt couldn’t come up with the ball, allowing Truong to score the winning run for Rosetown.

Rosetown will face Tri-City at 10 AM tomorrow, with the winner of that affair advancing to face Wayzata in the state championship. Edina has been eliminated.
