Wayzata Post 118 won the 2019 Gopher Classic, making this their third championship in the last 4 years at the nations largest American Legion Baseball Tournament.
Wayzata Post 118 put up five runs in the seventh on its way to a 9-3 victory over New Ulm Gold on Tuesday. Brennan Albert, Connor Fletcher, Josh Gullickson, and Charles Engdahl all moved runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.
Wayzata fired up the offense in the first inning, when Albert doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.
Wayzata put up five runs in the seventh inning. Albert, Fletcher, Gullickson, and Engdahl all contributed in the big inning with RBIs.
Ben Leuthner was credited with the victory for Wayzata. He lasted six innings, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out one. Albert threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.
Colten Schaefer started the game for New Ulm Legion Gold. He lasted three innings, allowing seven hits and four runs while walking zero. Nolan Drill and Teagan Kamm entered the game from the bullpen, throwing three innings and one inning respectively
Wayzata collected 14 hits in total. Albert, Brandan Brolin, Gullickson, and Engdahl all collected multiple hits for Wayzata. Brolin and Albert each collected three hits to lead Wayzata to the championship.
