After falling to Edina in the opening game of the 94th Minnesota American Legion State Tournament, Buffalo Legion Post 270 defeated New Ulm Gold Legion Post 132 by a score of 5-1 to advance to a key elimination round game with Woodbury Blue.
They matched Woodbury Blue with their difficult climb through the elimination round bracket by winning 4 straight games to place them two games away from a berth to the Central Plains Regional Tournament in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Buffalo knocked out East Grand Forks (5-2), Eastview (2-1), Duluth Lakeview (8-1) in loser go-home games and today, New Ulm Gold .
4 errors plagued New Ulm Gold as Buffalo scored 3 unearned runs in the top half of the second inning and never looked back. New Ulm Gold out hit Buffalo 8-6 for the game but could not string together enough hits to overcome their deficit.
Buffalo starting pitcher Kai Brisk launched a line drive 2-run home run off New Ulm Gold pitcher Braden Zimmerman, looking very John Lester of the Chicago Cubs like. The line drive shot popped off left field foul pole opening up a 5-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning. It was the first home run hit at Cold Spring Park this tournament.
Brisk was steady on the mound as he allowed one run on eight hits while striking out 3 in his complete game victory.
Ethan Hansen was 2-4 leading the Buffalo attack at the plate. Buffalo gets an abbreviated break and will face Woodbury Blue at 3:30pm from Cold Spring Park with the winner advancing to the final three.
