The two remaining teams without a loss in the 94th Minnesota American Legion State Tournament took to the field at Cold Spring Park Saturday evening. Excelsior Legion Post 259 ambushed Edina Post 471 for 9 runs in the top of the first inning to cruise to a 14-3. The win guarantees a spot in the Central Plains Regional Tournament in Sioux Falls, SD. It also solidified a spot for Excelsior in the state final.
The outburst consisted of 9 runs on 5 hits while sending 14 hitters to the plate. Excelsior’s first 6 batters scored and they never looked back.
Edina went to Jonathan Bunce in relief of starter Thomas Quello. Bunce was able to stem the tide by gaining the final out of the first inning and holding Excelsior off the board for the second inning. Four more Excelsior runs were plated in the top half of the third inning. Edina responded with a pair of runs of their own in the bottom half of the third frame but it would be too little too late.
William Lalonde got the start on the mound for Excelsior and handled the Edina bats during five innings of work. He allowed three runs on 8 hits, striking out three and walking zero.
Excelsior had a balanced attack with seven players picking up a hit in the game. Jarod Wandersee was 3-5 with 3 rund and 3 RBI. Joining him in the multi-hit attack was Will Sturek who was 3-4 with 2 runs and 3 RBI.
Edina and Woodbury Blue will play at 10am for the right to earn the second berth to the Central Plains Regional Tournament. The winner also move on to play Excelsior for the State Championship at 12:#
